How to Choose the Right Boxes for Your Home Move

It is tempting to use any old boxes when it comes to packing your items for your move. However, you need to ensure that you are using the right-sized boxes that have the correct strength for what you are packing. Below we discuss how to choose the right boxes for your home move.

Avoid damaged boxes

If you are hoping to re-use old boxes you have or those from friends or family, ensure that you don’t use any damaged ones. Boxes exposed to water or damp will no longer be sturdy enough and could break during the move. If any of the boxes have holes or the seams are coming apart, avoid using these, as it is likely they will not securely hold your possessions.

Use thick boxes

The thicker the box, the stronger it will be. It is recommended that you use 3 ply boxes for more fragile items as it adds that extra protection. For items that require less protection, 2 ply boxes or double-walled boxes will suffice. The thicker the boxes the better the team will be able to stack them in the removal truck without causing any damage, so it is always best to invest in thicker boxes.

Choose the right size

Smaller boxes should be used for heavy items, such as books or electronics. This is because it will be less likely to cause damage to the box and will be easier to lift if you are packing it to the maximum. Medium boxes can be used for the majority of your items, just make sure you are filling them completely and it isn’t too heavy. Large boxes can be used for lighter, bigger items such as cushions, duvets, and pillows.

Wardrobe boxes

Wardrobe boxes are a great idea to get when packing your clothes. These boxes come with a built-in hanging rail so that you can simply remove the hung-up clothes from your wardrobe and place them straight into the box. This saves you a lot of time and ensures that your clothes aren’t creased during transit. If you are unable to source these boxes yourself, you can ask your removal company, who should be able to help you.

Make sure your boxes can close

It is tempting to just pile everything into a box, however, it is really advised that you should only fill your box to a level where you are able to properly shut the lid. You can then tape the box up and it can easily be moved around and stacked in the truck. If boxes aren’t shut, items could fall out during transit, which could damage the items and become a big hassle trying to sort everything out on the other side.

Ask your removal company

If you want to ensure that you are using the correct boxes and the best packing materials possible, to ensure that your possessions are safe and efficiently packed, then the best way to do this, is to ask your removal company. Removal companies offer packing services where they can provide you with state-of-the-art packing materials and even pack your belongings for you. This way you know that your possessions are safe and there will be no damage during transit. It will also save you a lot of time and they can even unpack for you on the other side, helping your move be stress-free and as smooth as possible.
