Knysna sits on a warm water estuary fed by the Knysna River, which reaches the sea through a narrow channel between two cliffs known as the Heads. It is the seat of the Knysna Local Municipality inside the Garden Route District, and the N2 runs through the middle of town, about 72 km east of George and 25 km short of Plettenberg Bay.
