How to Move a Refrigerator

Refrigerators are heavy pieces of furniture. They can be hard to move around easily and if done incorrectly can lead to damage or result in bodily injuries to those moving it. Below we talk about the best way to move a refrigerator easily and effortlessly.

Empty the fridge

The first thing you will need to do when preparing the fridge to be moved is to empty it. Not only will this lower the weight of the appliance, but it will also make sure that there is no food rattling around or any jars or bottles smashing inside. Be sure to remove any ice trays or moveable shelves. The fridge should be empty and defrosted at least 24hrs before your move.

Unplug the fridge

Next, you will need to unplug the refrigerator from the wall. If your fridge has a built-in ice maker or water cooler, you will need to disconnect it from the water source. Keep the chords and any separate part of the fridge together, so that nothing gets displaced during the move. It is advised to leave the fridge to sit for 6 to 8 hours so that everything defrosts properly. The fridge should be empty and defrosted at least 24hrs before your move. Otherwise, your fridge could leak during transit or develop mould.

Secure the fridge doors

Before putting the fridge into the removal truck, it is advised to use something to keep the doors shut. For example, you could use bungee cords or strong duct tape. You can even use cling film if you wrap it around a few times. This will stop your doors from flying open during transit and prevent them from becoming damaged.

Use a trolley or cart

Refrigerators are very heavy. When it comes to physically moving the fridge, be sure to use a trolley or a cart to easily move the heavy load. Put the tow blade under the fridge doors then pull back on the handle to lift the fridge slightly off the ground. You can then wheel it to the removal truck easily.

Make sure the fridge is secure

When the fridge is placed in the removal truck, ensure that it is standing up and not lying down. Lying a refrigerator down can cause it to create an irreparable leak in the cooling system and it will no longer work. Place the fridge in the corner of the truck, up against two walls if possible. Surround it with heavier boxes or furniture that can keep it pinned into place and prevent it from falling over whilst being transported.

Leave the fridge to settle after transportation

If you moved the fridge in a normal standing position without a tilt, then you will need to let your fridge settle for at least one hour before turning it on. If your fridge was placed in a tilted position for a prolonged period of time then compressor oil could have spilled into the refrigerator system, which isn’t good. You will need to give your fridge more time to settle so that the oil can flow back into the compressor before it is plugged in. Try and let your fridge setting for the same amount of time as the move.
