There are three main factors that contribute to the economy of Velddrif, namely fishing, tourism and salt production. When entering this small coastal town, you will be amazed by the salt fields visible from the road. Here you will see hundreds of kilograms of salt ready to be shipped across the Western Cape. This gives Velddrif the title of being the main provider of salt in the Western Cape. Next is fishing. Fishing contributes a lot towards the community and its people, as Velddrif is along the Crayfish Route that spans along the coasts of the Western Cape. Last, but certainly not least, is the tourism part of the economy. Many people, local and international, come to visit this small coastal town and experience the tranquility and beautiful scenery it has to offer. Some of the top reasons tourists are attracted to this town include wildlife, fishing, yachting and art galleries.

History

Not much is to be said about the discovery of Velddrif. The story is actually pretty simple. The town is now situated on what once was a farm, owned by Theunis Smit. The name came from the fact that Theunis took his cattle and the rest of his animal stock through a drift in the field (drift meaning ‘drif’ in Afrikaans and field meaning ‘veld’ in Afrikaans’) in order to find grazing fields across the river.

Attractions and Education

As the town is of a very smaller size, there are unfortunately not a lot of options when it comes to educational facilities. The schools that are available in the area include Noordhoek Primary School, Velddrif High School and ‘Visvoetjies’ Day-Care Center.

Attractions

One of the top attractions that any tourists or resident can easily visit is the stunning beaches that are open to the public, where you can run, swim and sunbathe until your hearts’ content. The most popular beach to visit is Kersbosstrand Beach. Another great activity that can be enjoyed by any age or any family member is Tollie’s Boat and River Cruises, taking you around the town and explaining the history and the culture of the community.
