September is the middle of whale season and Muizenberg sits at the front of it. Southern right, humpback and Bryde’s whales are along this coast from June through to December, and Boyes Drive between St James and Kalk Bay is the best land based viewing on the Peninsula. Down on the sand, Surfer’s Corner is where South African surfing began and the beginner lessons run all year, on a beach that is flat, wide and gentle enough for small children. The row of painted bathing boxes behind it is probably the most photographed thing in Cape Town.
