Bredasdorp was established in 1838 when the community of the surrounding farms wanted to come together and build a Dutch Reformed Church, on what was once the Langefontein Farm. The town was named after Michiel van Breda, the first mayor of Cape Town at the time, who was known as the founding father of South Africa’s merino sheep industry.
