This gives Velddrif the title of being the main provider of salt in the Western Cape. Next is fishing. Fishing contributes a lot towards the community and its people, as Velddrif is along the Crayfish Route that spans along the coasts of the Western Cape. Last, but certainly not least, is the tourism part of the economy. Many people, local and international, come to visit this small coastal town and experience the tranquility and beautiful scenery it has to offer.     History<\/b><\/p>\n

    Not much is to be said about the discovery of Velddrif. The story is actually pretty simple. The town is now situated on what once was a farm, owned by Theunis Smit. The name came from the fact that Theunis took his cattle and the rest of his animal stock through a drift in the field (drift meaning \u2018drif\u2019 in Afrikaans and field meaning \u2018veld\u2019 in Afrikaans\u2019) in order to find grazing fields across the river. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
