Moving Boxes and Packaging – Where to get them?
One of the most important things to do before a house move is to gather packing materials including boxes. You will need a lot of boxes and packing materials to ensure that all of your belongings are packed up and ready for the big move.
Where can you get them?
Shops
One of the easiest ways to get moving boxes and packing materials is to go to the shops and buy some. Prices will vary depending on what shop you go to and what it is that you are buying. This is probably the most expensive way to buy boxes and packing, so isn’t always the favourite option for those who are moving.
From your removal company
Removal companies usually offer boxes and packing materials to their clients. It comes at an extra cost, however, although this makes the process a lot easier. They will be able to advise you on the best packing materials for your move and ensure you have the exact amount you require. Some removal companies even offer packing services where they will do all the hard work for you. This is great for those who don’t have the time or desire to do the packing themselves.
From your family and friends
Most people when moving house will borrow boxes and other packing materials from their friends and family. Usually, you will know someone that has recently moved or has a lot of materials lying around in their attic or in storage. You can then pass these boxes onto someone else who needs them afterwards or give them back to their owners.
From Facebook Marketplace
Facebook marketplace and other similar platforms are a good way to find free boxes and packing materials. After a move, you end up with a lot of boxes that you don’t need anymore. People often put these onto Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree so that they can get rid of them. They will most likely put this up for free. You will probably need to pick them up, so only search in your area. New listings come online every day so make sure you check a few times a week.
What boxes and packing materials should I choose?
Avoid damaged boxes and packing materials
If you are not buying your boxes and packing materials new, then you need to ensure that you are only using sturdy and undamaged boxes. If you use boxes and other packing containers that are damaged or structurally compromised, they could end up breaking during the move and this could lead to your possessions getting broken or lost.
Use thick boxes
Make sure the type of boxes you are getting are thick enough to withstand the weight and belongings they will be carrying. The box will be stronger, the thicker it is. It is recommended that you get 3 ply boxes for any fragile items or heavier items you might have, to add protection. For items that are lighter or not fragile, 2 ply will suffice.
Thicker boxes are better when stacking them in the removal truck. This will ensure that nothing is damaged during transit, so it is worth taking the time to find and source thicker boxes.
Choose the right size boxes
When it comes to packing heavier items, you need to use smaller boxes. This will make sure there is less chance of breakage, and it will keep your possessions safe whilst moving. Medium boxes and containers can be used for most of your belongings, just make sure that you are not over-packing them so that the contents don’t spill out. Large boxes can be used for lighter items, such as clothes, cushions, duvets, and pillows.
