5 Steps to Follow When Packing Electronics for a Move

Electronics are very fragile and can easily get damaged during a move. You need to be careful when packing your electronics for transit and ensure you follow the five steps below to make sure they are safely packed and ready for transport.

Back any files up

For computers, hard drives, phones, and any other electronics that have stored files and images, you need to make sure you have a backup. This way if anything is damaged in the move, you know that you have the files stored somewhere safe and don’t have to worry about recovering anything of importance. There are online services that allow you to store files and images safely, which aren’t physical copies.

Make sure you have the right materials

To pack electronics away safely you will need sturdy moving boxes that are larger than the electronic devices you are packing. You will also need packing paper or soft materials to place in the boxes to ensure there are no gaps and therefore no moving around of objects when in transit. If you don’t want to buy packing paper, you can use sheets, towels, or any other linen that you have on hand. Read our guide on how to choose the right boxes when moving.

Organise all your electronics

Before you start to pack up your electronics, make sure they are all organised. If you are transporting your electronics with all of their components together, then place everything into little piles, so that you know what chord or other parts go with what electronic. If you have decided to pack all of the cords together from different electronics, it is important that you label each cord to show what it is. There is nothing worse than having a large bundle of cords with no clue about what each one does.
For electronics that are hard to assemble, when taking them apart for transit, either take photos or film a video showing what goes where. This will help you save a lot of time at the other end when you are unpacking.

Place these items last into the removal truck

Electronics are often sensitive to temperatures and if they get too hot or too cold, then this could have some damaging effects on them. Make sure they aren’t outside in the truck exposed to the elements for too long, especially if you are moving during a particularly hot or cold time. Make sure that the containers your electronics are packed away in are placed into the truck in a careful manner. Also ensure that the containers are in a place where they won’t move around or have anything fall on top of them.

Label the containers

Once you have packed all of your electronics, make sure you label the containers with what is inside; as well as to write ‘fragile’ and ‘this way up’ on them. This will allow the removal company to know what is inside and to be very careful with it. It will also help them know where to put the containers in the removal truck to ensure they are kept safe and out of harm’s way.

Use a packing service

If you are still nervous about packing your electronics in a safe manner and would like some help, then some removal companies offer packing services. This is where they pack up your possessions for you, using their professional packing materials. This way you know that your possessions including your electronics are all safe and won’t be damaged in transit.
