The land where Krugersdorp stands today was first discovered in 1885 and became a popular spot to settle after gold was discovered on a farm owned by Parthinus Pretorius. After the discovery of gold, more and more farmers and miners moved to the area in order to grasp this great opportunity. This started the industrial development of the area. Krugersdorp was only established as an official town when the South African Republic’s Executive Council decided to buy the land in 1887 and establish the town we know today as Krugersdorp.

Krugersdorp is primarily a mining town which contributes largely to the survival of its economy. Gold, manganese, iron and lime are all mined within the area and shipped out to the rest of South Africa. Other factors that play a huge role in the economic sustainability of Krugersdorp are the Jack Taylor Airfield and The Krugersdorp Game Reserve.
