Keeping phone number when moving house

DOES YOUR LANDLINE NUMBER CHANGE WHEN YOU MOVE?

Yes, but not always. Usually, you can keep your phone number when you move within the same area, with the same telephone exchange prefix – for example 01… or 02. Especially if the codes are an exact match. You can check your area codes here. But if you move far away and the codes are very different, your number will likely change.

HOW DO I KEEP MY LANDLINE NUMBER WHEN I MOVE?

You’ll have to arrange a moving house phone setup with your supplier – exactly what the above steps in this post helps you do! Which means notifying your supplier 30 days in advance and opting to take them with you to your new address. If your new home isn’t too far away, you keep your number.

But note these two things: It gets complicated when you switch providers (you might not be able to keep your number!), and, of all the home phone providers in the UK, Sky isn’t able to help you keep your number – for whatever technical reason. So keep that in mind.

WHAT ABOUT KEEPING MY NUMBER WITH SKY?

We’re not exactly sure why but provider Sky Talk and Broadband can’t transfer your old number to a new address. Sky will always issue you with a new number for a new address, even if it’s right next door.

DO BT CHARGE TO MOVE HOUSE?

BT only charges for moving house phone supply under certain conditions. If the new home doesn’t have a landline installed, you might have to pay for installation. If you choose an upgraded package for your new home, you might have to pay an activation fee. And, if you want to cancel your BT service but don’t inform BT 30 days before your move and cancellation, you could pay an early termination fee.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO MOVE A BT PHONE LINE?

Sometimes, nothing. But if any of the above applies, you could be liable to pay. BT Landline installation usually costs £140. And, activation costs apply to all BT TV and some internet packages. So, if you upgrade to a phone + internet or TV, there could be an upgrade activation charge upwards of £20 – see their price guide.

Early termination fees are calculated from the monthly costs for the duration of your contract period, minus VAT and 1% or any savings BT generates by not delivering your service. It’s unfortunately a bit complicated, but you can get more details under “early termination” in their price guide here.

CAN I CANCEL BT WHEN MOVING HOUSE?

Yes, of course! Just contact them at least 30 days ahead of the date you want to cancel from (or your move date) and ask them to cancel your phone service. Just note, with contracts there might be an early cancellation charge – see note above.

HOT TIP: When moving home phone suppliers (switching) to someone new at a new home, it’s always best to ask your new supplier to set up your service for you. They want new customers, so they’ll arrange the whole thing on your behalf – saves you a ton of effort!
