Moving House Energy Supply: What to do with utilities when moving
Just as important as picking a good removal company, it’s always best to notify your suppliers and utilities well ahead of the time before you move. And that includes moving house energy supply. Remember that closing the account at your current address and ensuring your supply at the new one can take some time – a good rule of thumb is to notify them at least 30 days in advance.
Of course, you’re free to organise your utilities when moving according to your preferences. Feel free to request your current supplier to activate at your new home, adopt the new house’s current supplier or even switch suppliers – it’s all up to you and your needs. (In fact, moving home might be a good time to look at the budget and available prices and services, to reassess and see if you’re getting the best service for your needs.)

HOW TO SET UP UTILITIES WHEN RENTING A HOUSE IN THE UK
Depending on your rental agreement, you are usually free to organise your own utilities when renting. That’s when you pay your supplier directly for your utilities, in which case you’re welcome to switch suppliers when moving etc. But note: If you’re not the person paying the supplier directly, you can’t just switch or change, you’ll have to work through the person who handles the account – probably the rental agency or landlord.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY ENERGY SUPPLIER WHEN I MOVE HOUSE?
You need to notify your supplier that you’re moving – at least 30 days before your move. That’s because it takes time to close off your account at your current address and set up a new one for your new address. NOTE: You’re allowed to manage moving house electricity supply however your prefer. You can take your current supplier with you or switch to a new one.
HOW DO I SWITCH ENERGY TO A NEW HOUSE?
You need to notify whoever’s going to supply your new address at least 30 days ahead of your move, to ensure your supply is connected by the time you move in. This can be either your current supplier or a new supplier at your new address.
HOW DO I CHANGE MY ENERGY SUPPLIER WHEN MOVING HOUSE?
There are many ways of changing or moving house electricity supplier, but the boxing-clever way is to contact the new supplier you want to join and ask them to facilitate the change for you. See, energy is a very competitive industry, and each supplier wants to secure new business, so they usually have entire teams/departments dedicated to helping you switch to them easily. So you don’t have to do a thing really, they handle the switch for you.
CAN I TAKE MY ENERGY SUPPLIER WITH ME WHEN I MOVE?
Of course. In fact, most people prefer to stay with their current electricity supplier, even when moving house – if only because you know them and are used to their rates and service. Usually, though, you still need to notify them at least 30 days before you move so they can close your account at your current address and ready your supply at your new home.
MOVING HOUSE: OVERLAPPING UTILITIES
What happens if your utilities overlap when moving house? Sometimes your closing bill at the old address overlaps a bit with the opening bill at your new address. And it’s usually when you haven’t given the supplier enough notice time ahead of your move (remember to always give about 30 days’ notice minimum). Hopefully, the bill isn’t that much, but if it is you can usually just phone your supplier and speak to them about it – they should be understanding, especially if you’re retaining them as your supplier.
HOT TIP: When moving on short notice, it might be better to retain the existing supplier at your new address for the first month or so, just so you avoid overlap. You are then free to switch supplier at your leisure once you’re all moved in and settled.
