What to Do When Moving Home with OVO Energy
New customer. Switching. Or taking OVO with you. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide to manage moving home with OVO Energy as your supplier.
Gas. Electric. And ensuring you stay supplied. Our team has put together a quick guide to moving home with OVO Energy as your utilities supplier.
Because, just as important as picking a good removal company, it’s always best to notify your energy and broadband supplier at least 28-30 days before you move. And OVO Energy has specific contacts and steps, whether you want to keep them or switch, take them with you, sign up as a new customer or even arrange a change of tenancy when renting. Here’s how it works:
Moving Home with OVO Energy
OVO Energy is one of the biggest gas, electricity and home energy suppliers in the UK. And, in early 2020, OVO bought out fellow “big six” energy supplier SSE – see all about moving home with SSE. This does not affect your OVO Energy, though. Your My OVO, OVO App and contacts all stay the same when moving home with OVO Energy.

1. MOVING AND TAKING YOUR OVO ENERGY WITH YOU
If your gas and electricity is currently supplied by OVO Energy, it’s best to plan to notify them at least 28-30 days ahead of your move. Here’s how:
Step 1: Notify OVO Energy that you’re moving
Log into your OVO Energy account via the My OVO login on their website here and follow the prompts on the screen. You’ll need to do this at least 4 weeks in advance of your move to be sure your energy will be activated at your new address (depending on whether OVO Energy is already active there or not), so maybe plan to notify them at least 28 days ahead of your move.
Step 2: Have all the right information ready
The OVO team will need to know the new address you’re moving to, your moving date and your closing meter readings at your old address. Then, as you move in, also just note down your opening meter readings at the new home and give those to OVO Energy, too, so they can calculate your usage as precisely as possible.
2. MOVING INTO A HOME WITH OVO ENERGY
If your new home is supplied by OVO Energy, it might be a good opportunity to try them out – here’s how to active as a new customer:
Step 1: Contact OVO Energy to get a quote
Enter your details on this dedicated page, including your new address, the size of the house and whether you want just electricity or gas too. Just follow the prompts to get an accurate idea of the costs for supplying your new home. NOTE: Also do this about 30 days before moving in, just to be sure.
Step 2: Choose your service
You’ll be given a quote with service options. OVO Energy has lots of extras like boilers and vehicle charging, as well as greener energy options to choose from, so you can customer your utilities the way you like. See their packages here.
3. MOVING OUT AND SWITCHING OR CANCELLING OVO ENERGY
Although they’d love to negotiate products and prices to keep you on board, if you really want to move without your service the best way is to actually contact your new suppliers and have them arrange the switch for you. Note: It can take up to 21 days to switch your energy supply, and remember that OVO Energy will need your closing meter readings, so they can manage a final bill for you for the duration of the switching period.
Also, note that if you cancel well ahead of the end of any specific contract/agreement period with OVO Energy, you might have to pay an early exit or termination fee.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY ENERGY SUPPLIER WHEN I MOVE HOUSE?
You need to notify your supplier that you’re moving – at least 30 days before your move. That’s because it takes time to close off your account at your current address and set up a new one for your new address. NOTE: You’re allowed to manage moving house electricity supply however you prefer. You can take your current supplier with you or switch to a new one.
For moving home with OVO Energy, see the steps above. For specific steps with other suppliers, see our guide to moving house energy.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SMART METER WHEN I MOVE HOUSE?
In most cases, you leave behind your OVO Energy In-Home-Device (IHD) that connects to your smart meter at the address. If your new home has a smart meter, there should be a new IHD there waiting for you. You can always double-check with your supplier if you’re unsure.
DO YOU HAVE TO PAY EXIT FEES IF YOU MOVE HOUSE?
No, not usually. If you move house and take your existing supplier with you, there’s normally no fee. Even if you switch suppliers when moving, there isn’t always an exit fee, especially if you move near the end of your contract period. It’s only when you switch suppliers well ahead (at least 50 days or so before) the end of your contract/agreement with your current supplier that an early exit or termination fee might apply. But it also differs from one supplier to the next – they usually stipulate any exit fee amounts in your agreement documents.
