Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries and its’ history can be traced back to the Roman times. The city today is still a port city and is today still the prime location for the UK’s surface fleet for the navy.
Today the city’s biggest industry is defence, comprising of 10% of the populations employment. Portsmouth is also home to two of the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers.
The city has a vibrant cultural life as it has over several theatres, hosting shows and performances throughout the year. From live music to plays and various productions, you will always find something to go and enjoy. There are also some notable people that came from Portsmouth such as the author Charles Dickens, the actor and comedian Peter Sellars, Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book as well as the author H.G. Wells.
Commuting to and from Portsmouth is easy as you can decide between trains, busses, aircraft or ferries as your way to travel.
